Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours worked across midnight?

If end time is earlier than start time, the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to the end time to account for crossing midnight. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM = 8 hours.

How are partial hours handled for payroll?

Many employers round to the nearest quarter-hour (6, 7, or 8-minute rounding). Some pay in 6-minute (0.1 hour) increments. The exact policy is set by your employer — this calculator shows exact decimal hours which you can round per your company policy.

What is the FLSA overtime rule?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires non-exempt US employees to be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek. States like California have additional daily overtime rules (1.5× after 8 hours, 2× after 12 hours).
