How Calories Burned Is Calculated

Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)

MET is a measure of exercise intensity relative to rest (MET 1.0 = sitting still). Walking briskly is ~3.5 MET. Running at 6 mph is ~9.8 MET. The formula gives a close estimate of total caloric expenditure including your resting metabolic rate during exercise.
